A level preliminary task

I got a video off you tube of  someones A level preliminary task to asses and look at and also help me see where it can work well or faults can be made when it comes to working on my own task.

This video shows a lot of cuts where good movement match is needed. The person who filmed and edited this video did very well with this however there is a slight overlap at the beginning. When
the person in the clip is being filmed from behind it seems he walks past the lockers and he is no longer walking along side them. However, when it cuts to filming him walking towards the camera, he is still walking next to the lockers and is only about halfway past them. It is a very small error however it is something i noticed when watching the clip.
The movement match on his hand is really good when it goes from a wide shot to a close up. The movement is matched really well here and i saw no differences in how his hand was on the handle and no over lapping.

I think the movement of the camera when it follows him as he walks an sits down is really affective and works really well. It is a good way of showing the persons movement through the room.

The over the shoulder shot also works well as it shows both people at the same time making it clear they are talking to each other. When the camera is looking over the shoulder of the teacher the paper seems to be upright and when it chances so it is looking over the students shoulder, the paper is bent. This would of been a problem but its shows the paper bending so it does work effectively and is seen to be a movement match and not a error as the viewer can see how the change is made.

The brief we were given was to film someone walking into a room, sitting down and having a conversation with someone. I think this clip clearly shows that and fits in well with the task given.

Storyboard planning

When planning a story board, you must make sure it is easy to follow and shows every clip you want to include in your final cut. You must also make sure that you can easily write a dialogue to go with it.

An important thing to remember is to all ways number each shot. This helps with filming and also editing.  Each clip can be numbered 1,2,3 but if you are showing the same clip with a type of movement or change then using numbers 1a, 1b, 1c is efficient as it also shows there are all different parts of one shot rather then a different shot completely. It can be used in action shots, for example a punch.

Showing movement is important and can be done by simply using arrows.
If you had a picture of a person and you wanted to show they would be walking, you would draw an arrow next to them pointing the way they would be walking.

To show the zoom affect is being used on an object or someones face you would draw that object or face with arrows pointing inwards or have the object or face surrounded by lines going from the face or object outwards. Alternatively, you could use the 1a,1b,1c system and draw the full face or object and label it 1a then draw the face or object closer and label this 1b. You would then keep doing this in till you had the look of the correct amount of zoom you wanted drawn onto your storyboard.

Mistakes in big films

A lot of well know films, even those created by the most famous film companies can have continuity errors. This may be where shots have been edited together if a bad order or an actor has put down a prop in one shot from one angle but picked it up again and when it is shot from a different angle, they may not have done the same movement. These can be a easy mistake to make. There are many reasons to why and how these are made.

This image shows a mistake in a famous film The Matrix. The error hear may of been two takes of the same scene were shot but the gun was placed in a different place in each shot.

This next image was taken from a second very well know film Twilight. The tubing, as pointed out, is placed in a different place in each shot. This may of been a simple movement error or once again different positioning between filming one scene to the next. I have watched this film including this shot and did not notice it. This goes to show that some differences in shots are very subtle and may not be noticed.

This is a third example of errors using props. Unlike the other two images this is not where a prop has been moved slightly but where a prop is added. This may become more noticeable to someone watching as it makes shot look a lot different as it is not that subtle. Also the focus may be on the cake, it may even be the topic of conversation between charterers to the viewers eye is drawn to that prop. This means the error would be easily noticed.

Continuity

This video shows a mixture of good and bad continuity. The back ground, costumes and lighting stay the same when the shot changes from one charature Tom, to the other, Dean. However there is a shot where Tom is holding an empty sandwidge. It then cuts to Dean and when it cuts back to Tom, the sandwidge has been filled with a remote control. This shows bad continuity however it is made aware in the video.
